SPRING BREAK

Spring break

What is spring break exactly?

Spring break is traditionally a short holiday in spring when students from all over the USA gather* (*se rassembler)

on sunny beaches to have big parties and a lot of fun!

But how did this tradition start?

SwimmersA team of swimmers in the 1930s

It all started in the mid-1930s, when a swimming coach from Colgate University (New York State)

decided to take his team down to Florida for some early training* (* entraînement précoce)

at a brand-new* (* toute nouvelle) Olympic-size pool* (*piscine Olympique)

 in sunny Fort Lauderdale.

East coast us

East Coast of the U.S.A

Other college* (*université) swim coaches found it was a great idea

and soon the spring training migration became an annual tradition for swimmers nationwide* (*dans tout le pays).

But the college athletes also excelled in partying* (*faire la fête).

Word got back* (*la rumeur disait) to campus that Florida wasn't a bad place to spend Easter break

and the flow* (*le mouvement) of Northern* (*venant du Nord) college students to Southern beaches

started to pick up through the 1940s and 1950s

Girls needed!

Florida became "THE place to be" for Spring break because of its beautiful beaches and its hot weather.

Films like "WHERE THE BOYS ARE"(1960) influenced girls to join the parties too.

That's how, over the years, more and more, students have joined the Southern beaches

to relax and have fun before their final exams.

Do you think you would go to a Spring Break if it took place in France?

Hi teacher ! Thank you for this nice article.
When I was on campus in the USA a long time ago, I remember Spring Break was a big event ! We had a big party with a music band, cupcakes and other delicious American pastries, games, balloons... it was a lot of fun ! One of the best years in my whole life, but I must confess that I didn't know about the origins of Spring Break !
    Take care, XXX

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I'm sure I would have enjoyed studying in an American campus. I really enjoyed my year as an assistant in an English boarding school though. Let's enjoy spring now!

It is great women are becoming more powerful, but many inequalities remain... So many fights still need to be led for women's past and future rights all around the world !
Some of the rights we take for granted are sometimes in danger (like abortion), and it is just unacceptable !
    See you soon.

Indeed. All rights are precarious, especially women's rights. Take care!
