BYE BYE ELLEN!
Ellen DeGeneres, (in full Ellen Lee DeGeneres) was born January 26, 1958, Metairie, Louisina, U.S.
She is an American comedian and television host* (*présentatrice TV).
She is well-known for her Ellen DeGeneres Show.
She launched* (*lancer, démarrer) this show in 2003.
After two decades* (*décennies) of television, 4,000 guests, countless* (*d'innombrables) lives* (*vies, life au sg. = lives au pl.) changed,
and hundreds of scares* (*frayeurs), Ellen is saying its farewells* (*faire ses adieux) to her talk show.

But how did Ellen become so famous?
In the late 1970s, Ellen DeGeneres performed in local coffeehouses* (*cafés) .
Then, she travelled through the United States on the 'comedy club circuit'.

She was named the Funniest Person of the Year in 1982.
Ellen's coming out
After coming out as a lesbian in 1997, she faced severe backlash* (*réaction violente),
with many people calling for the cancellation* (* annulation) of Ellen, her sitcom at the time.
While ABC kept the show on the air* (*à l'antenne) for another season,
a new parental advisory* (*avis parental) was added to it for the ‘adult’ content* (*contenu pour adultes).

DeGeneres also earned* (*gagner) a number of awards for her show, including the Academy Awards in 2007 and 2014.
So, after 19 seasons, Ellen DeGeneres Show has ended in May 2022.

A Spice Girl in Buckingham!
Do you recognize this woman?
This is Mel B (her full name is Melanie Brown).
She became famous thanks to* (*grâce à) her Girls' Band called the SPICE GIRLS.
This group was made of* (*constitué de) 5 young British women. It was created in 1994.
The Spice Girls
Its members represented different types of women and they had nicknames* (*surnoms):
Mel C (Sporty* Spice) = *la sportive, Emma Bunton (Baby* Spice) = * la petite mignonne, Geri Halliwell (Ginger* Spice) = *la rouquine, Victoria Beckham (Posh* Spice) = * la snob and Mel B (Scary* Spice) = * l'effrayante.
They defended "Girl Power" especially with their famous song "Wannabe".

So, why was Mel B invited to Buckingham Palace in 2022?
On May 4th 2022, the former Spice Girl received a very special honour from the Royal Family.

Mel was named an MBE* (*Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her service to victims of domestic violence.

But what is an MBE?
The MBE is the third highest-ranking* (*le 3è plus haut grade) Order of the British Empire award,
a title of honour recognizing people for their bravery* (*courage) or service.

Hi Teacher,
Thanks for this very interesting article. Of course I know the Spice Girls and liked them pretty well, but I hadn't heard about Mel B's royal award ! I guess in France the equivalent would be "la legion d'honneur" !

Hi teacher, thanks for your tribute to this well-known TV show presenter. She was certainly sacked for the reasons you are giving us, but I have also read lots of bad comments about her degrading behavior toward some of her guests or staff members. I even saw her giving public apologies during her shows. I guess that all in all, that's why the show is finally stopping...

Hell dear Anne, I can see you have followed her career too. Indeed, she has apparently misbehaved lately but the producers kept on asking for the renewal of her contract too... I suppose they had to choose between making money and going to court. As for me, I prefer to remember the best moments of her career and all the famous guests having fun in her show. Have a nice day!
